About This Game

Shadowlings - is a slaughter to heavy metal in decorations of Medieval Japan.

After your Ninja clan helped The Great Shogan to seize power in the kingdom, he turned against you and destroyed your brothers.
But you survived - and now vengeful Shadowling goes after Shogan, leaving blood trail behind him. Let the swords sing and ring, let the arrows and shurikens whistle, and let Shogan tremble in fear looking at the shadows darkening around him. Shadows of your brothers who he's treacherously killed, and a shadow of an avenger who will hide the sun above his head forever.

Key features:

  • Hardcore battles, in which everything depends on your skill, not parameters of your character. True dance with the death!
  • Role system. Master and use ancient ninjas' martial arts - from increasing your survivability to reflecting arrows.
  • Ninja's arsenal. Purchase and find in treasures best weapons and armor, become even deadlier. Use kunai, shurikens and mysterious ninjas' elixirs
  • Devour souls of killed enemies and use them to cast Shadow Magic. Teleport, become invisible, hypnotize enemies.
  • Explosive soundtrack. Energetic heavy metal with Eastern motives that slams in unison with ring of your sword and rumble of falling bodies.
  • Characters style inspired by Japanese traditional doll Daruma.

I like this nice combat concept, based on physics and fair weapon's collizions. But the gameplay quickly becomes repetitive. Also, there are some problems with collizions - sometimes you can permanently stuck in a wall and then you have to start from last save. And I don't like the music (but maybe it's just me). I simply turned it off.

Shadowlings had a nice appeal for the first 15 minutes. It looked nice and felt nice. The way combat is done felt like something new. Sadly the initial appeal wears off very quickly and slowly declines into a boring grindfest. You get loads of money and XP with no real need for either of them. I kept waiting for game to become more interesting, but it never did. I even thought the final boss was just a prelude to the real boss. After an easy < 1min fight you get a few lines of how you are now the leader of your clan, which btw you were the only survivor of... It's like watching a TV series like Lost. After each layer of boredom there is just more boredom to walk through. In the end they just tell you sorry we never had any idea what we were doing. So this game really don't have much to offer. Sadly it looks like it could great, which makes you suffer more of it. I regret buying this game, not because of the money but the time wasted. Strongly not recommended.

This game can actually be a better one if not done like this. The combat is the core of the game and I like it: it rewards skill, fluid and fun, and can be deep if done correctly. However they did it wrong. the wrong part, from my point of view, are these: 1. Every single level is tediously long and feeling repetitive. it takes me 10 minutes to finally experience something new like the blinking enemy and new weapon, which is bad. The first 30 minutes game experience should be more about suprise and step by step engaging, not this. 2. Talent tree doesnt provide enough variety and new experiences. in the first level I was wondering if I could be have actually a build like poison dagger survive/magic projectile/blink backstabing or something to play the game differently, and I realize I could not which is a huge bummer. 3. All enemies are human and though they do have some variety, they feel the same. I would be excited to see giant monsters who fight completely differently to give me ...

Just bought it when I saw 0.81€ and it is really worth the full price ! Very good game, did not expect much of it but did not take much risk with the sale price..just spent two hours on it and I had a blast...the attack/parrying mechanic is very well done, as is the rpg side with useful abilities to unlock, and there's a shop where you can spend your hard earned money to buy new weapons, armor, throwing weapons etc...well worth playing with Controller Companion to use a pad instead of the keyboard...you can go for it, it's an hidden gem of a game !

Really good game, simplistic but lots of strategy involved. I'm lazy and that's all I want to type for now, but overall it's highway robbery at .99 cents. I kind of feel bad buying it that cheap. I think 5-7.50 USD would be a perfect price for this. I'll come back later or tomorrow when I'm sober and expand on what I think could be improved on a bit. All simple fixes too. Anyways, highly recommended, great 2d top strategic swordfighter game.

Shadowlings is a one-dimensional beat-em-up with reactive combat. You have 10 linear corridors stocked with enemies and a boss fight at the end, and not much else. The game gives a pretty good first impression with its physics-enriched swordplay, but ultimately your tactics boil down to the same thing: Lure the enemy one at a time. Do a dance of blocking and back stepping. Strike when you can. The lack of enemy and environment variety doesn't make this any better. What kept the game from being a throwaway for me was its rudimentary advancement system and the handful of tools you have at your disposal. It's fun to throw shurikens and knives, reflect projectiles by blocking, and blink during combat. With each kill, you get experience and gold which you can then spend to unlock passive abilities or spells (shadow magic). No theory crafting or interesting decisions involved. By the end of the game you'll have more than enough gold and experience to earn everything. Some quirks and weir...

Good game in small doses. Sadly, quite short.
