About This Game

The Thing from Nowhere is a Choose Your Own Adventure game inspired by monster movies from the 1950s and the Amiga classic It Came from the Desert.

In the summer of 1952, something strange is happening in the small Alaskan village of Joy.

A young girl believes she has seen a Qalupalik, an ancient Inuit monster known for kidnapping children. Most people disregard the report as the result of a child's overactive imagination.

But not you! You're an intrepid cryptozoologist following in the footsteps of your parents, who were pioneers in the field. This could be the opportunity you've been longing for!

Excited, you travel to the remote settlement, determined to unravel the mystery behind the sighting and find evidence of the creature's existence.

As you ponder nature's wonders and doze off to sleep during your flight, the words of a biblical prophecy form in your mind like a warning: "The meek shall inherit the Earth...".

I'm not sure how to rate this, having my first encounter with the creature. This is an homage to the wonderful Cinemaware titles, primarily It Came From the Desert - or is it? My experience so far has primarily become a matter of clicking text, with some choices, yet none of the fun "mini-games" we found in Cinemaware. There is the price, at $1.99 you can hardly complain. Yet I waited with baited breath for this to relive the days of Cinemaware and feel let down. The 'pop up" of people standees lends some life to the game, the tableaus are nicely painted but otherwise it feels lifeless and actually packed with more narrative than anticipated. When I got prompts to "get ready" and "shoot" I was truly expecting this game's version of the giant ant shootout, with a lizard, even the "text alternative." But no, literally clicking shoot was it, leading to more text narrative and no lizard in sight. I don't expect it to change at this point. However, there's the pervy couple running ...

For someone who picked this up with no preconceived expectations, this game was a really pleasant surprise, since I really liked the atmosphere in the old amiga classic, that eerie and mysterious atmosphere is still there and conveys it pretty well in its various locations, along with some great art and audio tracks, I remember the old amiga classic had some actions sequences in between adventuring but this makes it a more laid back experience, no such gameplay interruptions where you might need to shoot out the giant ant antennas just for the sake of it. Anyway the imposed atmosphere complements and makes the text interaction really engaging which I wasn't expecting, anyway can't complain about the price tag as well.

Short and sweet visual novel. The story isn't ground breaking, but keeps you interested until the end. Good amount of dialogue choices too. Apart from a few minor mistakes, the translation is brilliant. Also, the background music and the fonts match perfectly with the situation (and place) you're in at any given time. Game's also super cheap, so it's worth the money for a good hour or two of text-based storytelling.

I loved this title, but I'll admit it might not be for everyone. An illustrated story in the style of the Choose Your Own Adventure pocketbooks that were so popular years ago. I'm a fan of 1950's B-movies and this story captures that atmosphere wonderfully. The art and the music are perfectly appropriate for the story. I plan to replay a few times to try out different choices. Comparable to Dagon without the trivia or achievements.

"We was here for business." Tells everything there is to know about the translation of this game. Avoid.
